How many hours per week in average is the MSIS participant expected to spend in study?Coursework is rigorous and challenging. Beyond normal classes, you may expect to spend an average of 12-15 hours per week in individual and group study and preparation. A general rule of thumb is that you may spend an average of 1.5 to 2 hours outside work for every hour in class.

Are participants permitted to waive certain courses if they have taken the course or have prior experiences?Each participant is expected to participate with the group and contribute to the class in all areas where background knowledge and expertise may be less well-developed. Because each student adds important qualities to the richness of the group by bringing different business perspectives and experiences to the class discussion and group work, course waivers, substitutions, and transfers of credits are not generally approved.

Where will the classes be held?Classes are held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Shidler College of Business.

Where do Shidler graduates work?Many graduates remain in Hawaii, and others return to the U.S. mainland or Asia. The increase in salary experienced by exiting MBAs varies according to industry and previous work experience. Employers have included: Bank of Hawaii, Booz Allen Hamilton, PricewaterhouseCoopers, First Hawaiian Bank, Foodland, Frito Lay, Nabisco, AIG Insurance, Hewlett Packard, Hilton Hotels, the Internal Revenue Service and many other organizations. Some graduates have also started their own businesses. Is it necessary to have an undergraduate degree in business to enter the MSIS program?An undergraduate degree in business is a distinct advantage; however an undergraduate degree in business is not required. While many participants have vast educational backgrounds in business, some of the participants entering the MSIS program have educational background in other areas.

How can I pay for my studies?- The Shidler College of Business offers numerous scholarships and tuition waivers for full-time students, based on a variety of factors, which include: GMAT, GPA, number of credit hours completed in one's UH-Manoa program, etc. - Many loans, scholarships, grants and work-study opportunities are available to students enrolled at least half-time who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. See the link on the left to scholarships or contact the UH Office of Financial Aid for more information. An application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available for free online. - The East-West Center offers a number of scholarships for all students. The application deadline is November 1. The East-West Center also offers the Asian Development Bank Scholarship. For more information regarding EWC scholarships visit www.eastwestcenter.org/studentprograms. - Employment opportunities on-campus are generally open to both U.S. and international students.
